Keep your greenhouse warm in the cold winter months so your plants can thrive year round. In colder months when there is freezing temperatures outside,  you can keep your plants from freezing with a greenhouse heater. If you garden in a zone that has cold, freezing and or snowy winters then a greenhouse heater is an essential greenhouse accessory.

Types of greenhouse heaters

There are many different types of greenhouse heaters and heating systems for greenhouses. Before buying a greenhouse heater, you should first consider which will best meet the needs of your type of greenhouse operation.

• Size of your greenhouse
• Zone where your greenhouse is located.
• Type of plants you want to grow in your greenhouse.
• Budget for greenhouse heater
• How much will each type of heater cost to run.
• If the greenhouse heater runs of a particular type of fuel, it is easy, convenient and affordable to buy the greenhouse heater fuel.
• Does your greenhouse have a power supply.
• Do you live in a growing zone that has hot summers-consider buying a greenhouse heater with a cooling feature for the summer months.

Gas Greenhouse Heater

Gas greenhouse heaters require no electricity and are fueled with natural gas. Warm heat is circulated through the greenhouse from the floor up usually between 5-10 degrees of the floor temperature.

Greenhouse Space Heaters - Portable Greenhouse heaters

 Usually run by electric, space heaters are for small greenhouses exclusively.
 

Forced Air Greenhouse heater

Designed for heating a small greenhouse.  A forced-air heater consists of a forced air furnace with  duct system that distributes heat. A  thermostat is used to control the greenhouse temperature.

Hot water or steam greenhouse heater

This type of greenhouse heater is usually run with coal or natural gas. The greenhouse heater circulates hot steam.  This type of heater is often used in professional greenhouses because in addition to the heating benefits, the steam can be used to sterilize growing beds.

Electric greenhouse heater

Electric greenhouse heaters can provide heat overhead or on the ground through soil cable heat.

Greenhouse and/or Garage Heater

A portable  electric heater that generates 1500 watts of  concentrated heat. Special features include: audible alarm if overheated, power light indicator, reset-able thermal switch, 2 prong NEMA 1-15 plug and a tip-over switch. Perfect greenhouse heater for spaces up to 120 sq. ft.

Types of Mounted Greenhouse Heaters

Wall mounted greenhouse heaters: Attached directly to the greenhouse wall and vent outside of the greenhouse. The wall mounted greenhouse heaters do not take up a lot of space, but you need to have a type of greenhouse that you can mount the heater to the frame.  This type of heater is not suitable for a portable greenhouse.

Floor mounted greenhouse heaters: This type of greenhouse heater can be mounted to the floor or placed on "feet" to have the heater on the floor. Floor mounted greenhouse heaters do take up a little space, depending on the size of the heater you buy. When you are not using the heater, you could probably fit it under a plant shelf or greenhouse bench.

Hanging greenhouse heaters: Hanging greenhouse heaters usually come with the fittings to hang from a greenhouse ceiling.  They do not take up a lot of space, but need to be used in a greenhouse that you can mount or "hang" the greenhouse from the ceiling.
